Hanging Scaffold vs WEB Deck: Under deck project comparison

Scaffold is without a doubt an excellent product which when applied to the correct set of circumstances provides a fast and cost effective solution. What we have done is to take a look at the circumstances where we see that scaffold does not provide a best fit access solution and design a better solution, the WEB Deck. If you are looking at a ground based access solution where you have no issue with access to the ground level, then scaffold fulfills its purpose. However, when you enter the work sites where you cannot use or obstruct the ground level then hanging scaffold is erected with a much higher time to install and therefore cost. This is one of the sets of circumstances that scaffold metaphorically falls down and where the WEB Deck provides a faster and therefore cheaper temporary work platform. In order to illustrate this point take a look at the tabl e below which outlines a bridge under deck are of 30m x 10m. The numbers are estimates and will vary from project to project, but they offer a good comparison of the products in this work area application:

Vertech, our key client in Australia, is currently going through testing the WEB Deck for the Australian approvals. Standards vary throughout the world and getting the WEB Deck approved in Australia will be a significant step forward for Vertech and WEB for the Australasia region. The WEB Deck itself can be seen being tested here with the following comments being made by our client:

“We carried out the independent load testing today and the results were stunning…The last test was to see how much point loading the deck could take on the plywood. This was done a 100 X 100mm area halfway between the middle two styles, the deck took 700kg before the plywood cracked!!! Needless to say the engineers were blown away. Great design, great manufacturing.”

Encapsulated under deck of jetty for concrete repairs

We often get asked how do we encapsulate our under deck access system, I think the photo above shows how it is done. It is now essential to encapsulate many of the temporary works platforms for under bridge and jetty projects. In the above photo, the WEB Deck was being used for hydrodemolition and concrete repair works, requiring a robust encapsulation system. This jetty was in a particularly windy location, but with the side containment netting that we use plus a superior quality of encapsulation system, we were able to provide an encapsulation system that could withstand the weather and work conditions.

Bridge under deck access system

Now this project man not be as glamorous as an iconic structure in Abu Dhabi, but I have to say that the WEB team have done a great job this week. The access platform that we are constructing to the under deck of this Network Rail bridge has to take serious loads that no scaffold can be built to take.

The team has successfully completed two big lifts of the WEB bracing in what can only be described as testing conditions. We are working variable shifts as access to the under deck of the bridge is limited by high tides. Despite the tide (and rain) I am delighted to say that the team led by Bill are doing a grand job. More photos to follow next week of this big install.

Latest WEB Deck Breakthrough Project – Gate Towers, Abu Dhabi

The WEB Deck is being used as part of the construction of the Gate Towers project in Abu Dhabi. The table top is going to be hoisted into place, one of the largest lifts ever performed. Once installed the WEB Deck will be used to provide a temporary work platform to the under deck of the structure for cladding installation. When it comes to ingenious solutions to difficult under deck access, we think we have it covered.

Rail bridge under deck access project commences

The latest WEB Deck project is now underway on a rail bridge in Cumbria. This is a technically complex project as the system has been designed to take a 9kN per m2 lateral UDL to allow for flood water. No scaffold could provide this strength of system demonstrating the unique qualities of the WEB Deck - strong, light and safe.

You can see the first end bracing is now in place, installed around the tides which has provided another level of complexity to the situation. Can you tell the guys are proud?!

Patent application

The WEB Deck is now covered by a full and substantial patent protecting this unique under bridge and jetty access system. Gordon Bissset, the inventor of the system, has spent over five years developing the WEB system, drawing upon his experience as an expert rigger and engineer.

From a customer point of view this is important as it demonstrates the on-going considerable investment that we have made into the design and engineering behind the WEB Deck. Looking forward, there are future developments in the pipeline of additional products which will add increased value for any customers looking for a tried and tested under bridge access system.
